Her mother died by the time she was 5. Her father remarried and she refused to acknowledge her stepmother as anything but a "housekeeper". I'm sure that type of attitude and lack of manners were not tolerated very well during that time frame. She seemed to be living during the wrong era. A strong personality and wit dampened by society, but she pressed forward to be outwardly successfully....who knows what she was really feeling inside; hence, the unsuccessful attempted suicides. She married 3 times, twice to the same man. Maybe he didn't realize what he had until she was gone? Or maybe that was the reported bisexual one that couldn't make up his mind.
